They make new queens they only start with 1 Queen. Most of those queens are going to over winter and start new colonies this year.

Yes, and in some warmer parts, like the southern states of the US, mild winters keep queens in the nest and the workers have to build huge nests so that multiple queens don't get to each other, but they are all one colony Shocked

Yes that does happen in the South. If it happened here it'd be crazy since for some reason everything has adapted to just explode with growth [usually May, it's a slow start then all of a sudden the nests will be almost basket ball sized]
